Special examination conditions for NESB students procedure

Parent policy: Extra exam time for NESB students policy

According to the university policy on extra exam time for NESB students, faculties can allow special examination conditions to be available to undergraduate students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) and non-standard English speaking backgrounds who are experiencing language difficulties in their first two semesters of tertiary study in the English language.

Procedure

1. Students who are eligible to apply as defined in the university policy, must do so by no later than Week 11 of the given semester, by lodging a completed application form to the language and learning support staff for science students.

2. The language and learning staff assesses the application against the eligibility criteria, makes a recommendation and forwards the signed form to the Unit Chief Examiner.

The type of special examination conditions available to eligible students in all units owned by the Faculty of Science should be both the provision of a dictionary and 30 minutes of additional time for the final examination.

3. The Chief Examiner (or nominee) considers the recommendation and makes the final decision, and notifies the student in writing of the outcome of the application before the commencement of the examination period.

4. If the student is approved for special examination conditions, then they must show the written approval to the supervisor at the examination venue.

5. The examination supervisor returns this letter to the Chief Examiner together with the exam script.
