Limits on credit given for science undergraduate and graduate courses

Policy

  1. Students enrolled in a science course (as listed below) or the science component of a double-degree course may apply for credit for studies completed at another institution for units for which equivalence of learning is established by the Faculty of Science. Irrespective of the equivalence of learning established, students are required to satisfactorily complete at Monash University, within the science course, at  least 48 points or not less than half the credit points for the course (whichever is less) in order to be awarded a degree, diploma or certificate for the course.
  2. The minimum credit points of Monash taught units that must be completed within a science course shall be in accordance with the following:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Science (Science Scholar Program)
  • Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)
  • Bachelor of Science (Enviromental Management)
  • Bachelor of Science (Medical Bioscience)
  • Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Technology)

48 points,  comprising not less than 36 points of science units including  a minimum of   24 points of level-three units, of which at least 18 points must be in the science area of specialisation (major sequence)

Bachelor of Science Advanced (with Honours) 48 points,  comprising the honours research project and the level-four honours coursework unit(s)
Bachelor of Biotechnology With Honours
48 points,  comprising the honours research project, and the level-four Commercialisation of Biotechnology unitPass degree
48 points of level-three or level-four units, including  at least  18 points in the area of specialisation
Bachelor of Environmental Science Honours degree
48 points, comprising the honours research project and the level-four honours coursework unit(s)Pass degree
48 points of level-three or level-four science units
Bachelor of Science component of a double degree 48 points,  including  a minimum of   24 points of level-three science units, of which at least 18 points must be in the science area of specialisation

24 points of level-four units in the science area of study including the honours research project 

Graduate certificate 12 points of level-two or three science units in the area of specialistaion
Graduate diploma 24 points of science units with at least 18 points of units at level-three in the area of specialisation


  1. Students enrolled in a science course who wish to study at another institution under complementary study, study abroad and/or exchange study must seek approval in writing from the managing faculty prior to the enrolment at another institution.
    1. Study at another institution will normally not be approved for any of the honours courses or the honours component of four-year programs.
    2. Students enrolled in a pass degree or the Bachelor of Science component of a double degree who are approved to undertake studies at another institution must still complete at Monash at least 12 points of level-three science units in the area of specialisation.
    3. Study at another institution is normally not available to students enrolled in a Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma.
