1. Course overview

Course code: 3525
CRICOS code: None – this course is not available to international applicants
First offered: 2001
Campuses: Gippsland
Duration: Normally two years part-time, with one unit per semester over four semesters (24 credit points)
Fees for local students: Fees will be charged on a pro-rata basis on the same fee scale as the course Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Fees for international students: This course is not available to international applicants

The Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Studies (GradCertMathStudies) aims to educate secondary teachers in the newest methods in mathematics, and to add mathematics as a teaching area to their knowledge base. Given current shortages of qualified mathematics teachers, this may be the way to a new career, or a new role in the current school.

Students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Studies will be eligible to seek entry into the course Graduate Diploma in Science (GradDipSc) to complete a full major in tertiary mathematics, if they achieve the entry requirements.

Some teachers in government schools are eligible for financial support from the Victorian Government Department of Education & Training Rural Retraining Program.

2. Outline of units to be studied

The course involves studying solid mathematics units: a minor in mathematics, comprising the following four units in first and second year level university mathematics:

Level 1

Level 2

3. Credit for previous studies

Credit may be granted for up to 12 points of recognised tertiary-level mathematics studies, provided these studies were completed within the last 10 years. Applicants for credit will need to demonstrate attainment of all objectives relevant to the unit(s) concerned.

4. Attendance

Each unit involves participation in either a two-day residential school on the Gippsland campus or a series of late afternoon workshops to be conducted on the Clayton campus.

5. Entry requirements

Completion of qualifications in secondary teaching: Entry to this course is available to applicants who have qualifications leading to registration as a secondary teacher in Victoria; some candidates with a three-year recognised degree and who are planning to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Education may be admitted.
