Part 5: Appointment of supervisorsOn admitting applicants to candidature, the Research Degrees Committee will, on the recommendation of the head of school, appoint a member of the academic staff of the university as a main supervisor. All supervisors are responsible to Faculty Board. Where prospective supervisors are themselves postgraduate candidatesIt is a requirement that main supervisors of candidates hold a masters or doctoral qualification. Staff members who are undertaking a masters degree may not themselves be appointed supervisors of candidates. A staff member who is undertaking a doctoral program must not be appointed as a supervisor where there is, or could be seen to be, an overlap between his or her research topic and that of the candidate. Eligibility of Research Fellows and Postdoctoral Fellows to be main supervisorsResearch Fellows and Postdoctoral Fellows may be appointed as main supervisors if their terms of appointment exceed the periods of candidature and they have previous experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates. Otherwise they may be appointed as associate supervisors. Code of Practice for supervision of doctoral and research masters candidatesApplicants, candidates, and supervisors should consult the Monash Research Graduate School Handbook for Doctoral and Master of Philosophy Degrees and ensure that they are familiar with Chapter 5 which contains the 'Code of practice for supervision of doctoral and research masters candidates'. |
