Part 17: Award of degree

Candidates who pass the requirements of the course but not at the equivalent of a class 1 (H1) or class 2A honours (H2A) grade required for admission to the course Master of Science by research, or who are eligible to apply but do not wish to do so, may apply to the Research Degrees Committee to receive the exit award of Postgraduate Diploma in Science.

Restriction on eligibility for admission to Master of Science by research

Candidates who are awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Science should be aware that they may not normally apply for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Science by research within a period of less than 12 months unless Faculty Board in any particular case otherwise determines (see Part 3: Admission to candidature).

The research project undertaken as part of the course Master of Science Preliminary would normally be credited towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Science award and may not be continued as part of the Master of Science by research program unless otherwise determined by Faculty Board.

Continuation of research program for Master of Science Preliminary candidates who transfer to the course Master of Science by research

Eligible candidates who transfer to the course Master of Science by research will normally continue the research program undertaken during their Master of Science Preliminary candidature.

Ratification of award of degree by Faculty Board

The qualification is not formally awarded until Faculty Board has accepted the recommendation for the award of degree by the Research Degrees Committee. This process may take two to three months after the results of the examination are known.

Invitation to apply to graduate

Following the ratification of the award of the degree by Faculty Board the candidate will be formally advised of the award of degree and invited to apply to graduate through the university's Graduations Unit.
