Scholarship opportunities for Science postgraduatesA wide range of scholarships are available for postgraduate research candidates at Monash University. Monash spends approximately $AUD30 million each year on its postgraduate research scholarship programs. Scholarships for research masters programs generally have a tenure of two years while those for doctoral programs may be held for three years with a possible six month extension in some cases. There are three-levels of opportunity for candidates wishing to obtain a scholarship to support the pursuit of a research degree in the Faculty of Science. These include:
1. Centrally-awarded scholarshipsOver 300 living allowance (stipend-paying) scholarships are offered at the main central selection round, which closes on 31 October each year. Approximately 70 international scholarship winners are also offered fees awards to meet their tuition costs. However, as under the Research Training Scheme (RTS) Australian students are not required to pay fees, Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens need only apply for living allowance or stipend scholarships. A further small selection round takes place in mid-year, when faculties and academic units nominate high quality students for additional living allowance and tuition awards. 2. Faculty and School funded scholarshipsThe Faculty of Science has recently introduced the Faculty of Science Dean’s Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme; a very generous incentive which looks to provide funding support to all eligible, newly commencing students in a higher degree by research (HDR) (e.g. MSc, MPhil, PhD) within the faculty or where there are joint supervisory arrangements with other faculties of Monash University. There are two scholarship types available within this scheme: Faculty of Science Dean’s Postgraduate Research Scholarship: which will provide a living allowance stipend commensurate with the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship: which will cover the cost of international tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Schools within the Faculty of Science also offer scholarships throughout the year including Monash Departmental Scholarships (MDS) or Monash Research Scholarships (MRS). These are funded through research grants and other outside sources. 3. External donor funded scholarshipsOther awards are available through schemes sponsored by AusAID, by individual countries and by a range of organisations and donors. An Australian database, the Joint Academic Scholarship On-Line Network (JASON) , is a very useful resource. Scholarships currently being offered within these three levels of opportunity are summarized in the tables below:1. Centrally-awarded scholarships
2. Faculty and School funded scholarships
