Margaret Clayton - Women in Research Postdoctoral Fellowship 2009

Overview

The Faculty of Science has established the Margaret Clayton - Women in Research Postdoctoral Fellowship to attract female early career researchers with outstanding potential to undertake research in areas of identified faculty research strength or emerging research potential.

One award only will be made in 2008 (for 2009).

1. Benefits

The fellowship will be funded for up to three years, with the second and third year of funding being confirmed following consideration of a report submitted by 1 November in 2009 and 2010 detailing the progress of the research during that year.

The school in which the fellow is based will be responsible for providing office accommodation and appropriate access to facilities and services necessary for the fellow's research program.

2. Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be female and undertaking research or have recently undertaken research in disciplines of relevance to the faculty;
  • be no more than five years from the date of award of a PhD as of 4 July 2008; and
  • have demonstrated potential to achieve research outcomes at an international level.

The fellowship is tenable only in the Faculty of Science at Monash University and it is expected that most of the time will be spent in the relevant school or centre.

Applicants must contact the head of the school in which they propose to undertake the research to discuss the proposed project.

3. Application process

Closing date

The closing date for applications is close of business on Friday, 4 July 2008. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. The full application is the covering letter, application form plus the additional pages outlining the project details. Referee reports must also be received by the closing date.

Paper copies

Applicants must submit an original plus four (4) paper copies of their fully completed and signed application. Applicants must also ensure that their referee reports are submitted directly to the Faculty of Science Research Office.

4. Selection process

Following a faculty-conducted competitive process, the successful fellow will be appointed within the Academic salary Level A/B range.  Superannuation will be provided plus, if necessary, a relocation allowance equivalent to the cheapest economy class airfare for travel to and from Melbourne. Research support will also be available from the relevant school or centre of up to $15,000 per annum.

Mid-September

Interviews will be held in person, by telephone or by video-conferencing.

Applicants not selected for interview will be notified by the Faculty of Science Research Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

End-October

Fellowship awardees will be sent a formal letter of offer.

Selection criteria

The selection criteria are to be addressed within a covering letter and the application form.

Essential

  • be female and undertaking research or have recently undertaken research in disciplines of relevance to the faculty;
  • competitiveness and achievements relative to opportunity as determined by:
    • the quality of past achievements
    • academic record
    • research performance
    • awards and prizes
  • quality of the aims, significance, plan and methodology of the proposed research project;
  • relevance of the proposed research project to the research priorities of the Faculty of Science; and
  • the degree to which an award would advance the aims of the Faculty of Science  Margaret Clayton – Women in Research Postdoctoral Fellowship program.

Desirable

  • demonstrate potential to attract external funds and to build a research group; and
  • demonstrate potential to be appointed to an ongoing academic position at Monash University.

5. Conditions of award

Successful candidates will be required to sign an agreement accepting the Monash University Conditions of Appointment for a Research Fellow, as well as the Conditions of Award for the Faculty of Science Margaret Clayton - Women in Research Postdoctoral Fellowship.
