Awards and prizes for science students
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular BiologyA prize of $200 is awarded to the top two students; one in each of the sequences of units BCH2011/BCH2022 and MOL2011/MOL2022. A prize of $300 is awarded to the top student completing a minimum of 24 points of the third-year units BCH3021/BCH3031/BCH3042/BCH3052/BCH3990. Stuart Stone MedalA medal and prize of $500 is awarded to the top student in fourth-year biochemistry and molecular biology honours. School of Biological SciencesJ W Warren PrizeThis prize is awarded to a student with the highest aggregate mark in two units of first-year biology. The prize, valued at $200, is named after Professor J W Warren in recognition of his contributions to the university, the school and in particular to first-year biology. Heron Island AwardA prize of $200 is awarded to a continuing student who makes the most outstanding contribution to the success of the Heron Island Field Excursion. Biology prizesA school prize of $200 is awarded to the student with the best aggregate score in level 2 BIO units, and a prize of $200 is awarded for the best aggregate score in level 3 BIO units (plant and/or animal biology). A school prize of $200 is awarded annually to the best honours candidate in zoology/botany who shows outstanding ability in research and scholarship. Genetics prizesA school prize of $200 is awarded to the student with the best aggregate score at level 2 and the student with the best aggregate score at level 3. A school prize of $200 is awarded to the best genetics honours student who shows outstanding ability in research and scholarship. School of ChemistryDulux Australia Prize in ChemistryA prize of $1000 is awarded annually to a chemistry student who has completed third year of the BSc course in the Faculty of Science and who is enrolled in the BSc (Honours) course in the School of Chemistry. Students who are permanent residents of Australia, or of whom at least one parent is a permanent resident of Australia, are eligible. The prize is awarded on the basis of relevant academic achievement and short-listed applicants will be required to make an oral presentation to the Dulux Technical Management at Dulux. The selection criterion is academic achievement but consideration may be given to such factors as character, leadership, personality and financial need. John Swan Honours AwardsThe School of Chemistry will offer up to two John Swan Honours Awards valued at $5,000 each to candidates enrolling in the Honours degree. These awards are competitive and applications are encouraged from candidates at Monash or other universities. The awards are based on overall academic excellence at third year level and may take into consideration extra curricular activities such as community involvement. B.M.Gatehouse AwardThis $200 award is available for the best performed student in second year based on their laboratory grades. SciMetrics PrizeThe SciMetrics prize of $250 is awarded to the third year student producing the best physical chemistry project. School of GeosciencesSummer Vacation ScholarshipsA number of four to six-week vacation scholarships are available in the School of Geosciences. Third-year students who are considering a career in geoscience research are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be linked to a research project of their choice over the summer vacation period. AusIMM Education PrizesAusIMM Education Endowment Fund provides funding for prizes for academic excellence, awarded to the student achieving the highest annual examination results in each year of AusIMM-recognised courses. Society of Exploration GeophysicistsThe SEG Scholarship Program provides both general and exploration specific scholarships raing from $500 to $2000. SocAustralian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association AwardThe Tony Noon Memorial Fund Award of up to $3000 is for honours students to assist them in their reseach and publication and/or dissemination of their research. ESSO Honours ScholarshipThis scholarship is available for a geoscience honours/Master of Science Preliminary student working on studies oriented towards disciplines relevant to petroleum geoscience.Geological society of Australia (Victorian Division)The F. Canavan Award is a cash sum for the purchase of geological textbooks and is awarded to the most promising student who has finished second-year geology at a Victorian university, as judged by the student’s academic performance. Department of Materials EngineeringThe following prizes are available only to Victorian materials science students and are provided by the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia Limited: IMEA Ltd Victorian Branch Student AwardA cash prize, one year’s membership of the institute and a certificate is awarded for demonstrated excellence in a particular unit of the course taken at any year level. IMEA Ltd Victorian Branch I J Polmear AwardA cash prize, one year’s membership of the institute and a certificate is awarded for best educational promise during the first effective year of a degree or diploma-level course. IMEA Ltd Victorian Branch IMMA PrizeA cash prize, one year’s membership of the institute and a certificate is awarded for the best student project submitted by metallurgy/materials engineering/materials science departments. IMEA Ltd Victorian Branch Engineering PrizeA cash prize, one year’s membership of the institute and a certificate is awarded for the best student project submitted by BEng, BTech, BSc courses. School of Mathematical SciencesAwards and Subsidies available in the Honours programme for 2008School of Mathematical Sciences - Honours Awards FundThe School of Mathematical Sciences offers Honours Awards to all thrid year students who have obtained an average of 85% or above in 24 points of relevant 3rd year units as required for honours entry. Chris Ash PrizePrizes of $50.00 each may be awarded annually to students, if funds are available, at first, second or third-year level for excellent academic results in the areas of mathematical logic, algebra and discrete mathematics Leo Gleeson PrizeA prize of $500 is awarded to the best honours student in applied mathematics. Carl Moppert Prize in MathematicsA prize of $250 is awarded to the best all-round mathematics honours student. CSPA Prize for AstrophysicsA prize of $200 is awarded for the best honours student in Astrophysics Pure Mathematics PrizeA prize of $250 is awarded to the most outstanding honours student in pure mathematics. Mathematical Statistics PrizeA prize of $250 is awarded to best honours student in mathematical statistics. AMOS Prize for Meteorology / OceanographyA prize of $100 for the best honours student in atmospheric science Department of MicrobiologyEd Westaway PrizeA prize of $200 and a certificate is awarded annually to the top microbiology honours student. CSL PhD PrizeA prize of $250 and a plaque is awarded annually to the best completing PhD student from the previous year, on the recommendation of the head of department. Australian Society for Microbiology PrizeThis award is made to the top student in both second and third-year microbiology, on the recommendation of the head of department. Yakult Prize for General Excellence in MicrobiologyThis prize of $250 is awarded annually to a top student in third-year microbiology. The assessment will be made on the basis of examinations, essays and practical work and be nominated by the head of department. School of PhysicsJ J McNeill Prize for PhysicsA prize of $350 is awarded to the top honours student from among those enrolled in experimental physicsor theoretical physics. The names of the recipients are displayed on a board in the School of Physics. Department of PhysiologyG D Thorburn PrizeIn recognition of the contribution of the former head of the Department of Physiology, Professor Geoffrey Donald Thorburn, this prize, to the value of $500, is awarded annually to the best student in fourth-year-level physiology, either in the Faculty of Science BSc(Hons) or the Faculty of Medicine BMedSc course. Physiology PrizeThis prize, to the value of $500, is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in 24 points of third-year-level physiology units offered in the Faculty of Science. Powerlab PrizeThis prize, to the value of $300, is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in at least 12 points of second-year-level physiology in the Faculty of Science. School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological MedicinePsychology undergraduate and fourth-year prizesThe School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine acknowledges the achievements of its highest performing psychology students. This acknowledgement takes the form of a prize awarded at the first, second and third year level of undergraduate study in psychology core units. At the level of fourth year study in psychology, a prize is awarded to the top performing student in Honours and in the Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology. In addition, an Honours Medal may be awarded to a student judged by the Board of Examiners to be exceptional. The prizes comprise a certificate and a cheque as listed below.
Australian Psychological Society (APS) Prize in PsychologyThe APS Prize in Psychology will be awarded to the student who gains first place at the end of either an APS-accredited program in psychology of four years duration leading to a single qualification or an APS-accredited fourth-year program in psychology comprising the equivalent of one year of full-time study. One APS Prize in Psychology will be given at each institution that has independent membership of the Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee and has APS-accredited programs of the above type(s). Recipients of the prize will receive a letter from the Director of Science of the APS that recognises the excellence of their achievements in studying psychology, a certificate, and an offer of 12 months free Associate Membership of the Society, with the waiving of the processing fee, if they make an application within 12 months of completing their program of study in psychology. Recipients will also be encouraged to present a poster on their work by having their conference registration fee paid by the Society if they present a poster based on their thesis, at the APS annual conference, in the year following the completion of their program of study. School of Applied Sciences and Engineering - Gippsland campusClarence Claude Fisher AwardA number of awards up to $1000 per student, based on academic merit and requirement for assistance, are available annually to students enrolled in undergraduate degree courses in the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering. RACI Gippsland Chemistry AwardsTwo awards available to second or third year high-achieving chemistry students undertaking a course that will lead on to a qualification that allows RACI graduate membership. International Power Mitsui Environmental Science ScholarshipInternational Power Mitsui will sponsor an annual Monash University Environmental Science Scholarship to the value of $1,500. Industry Engineering ScholarshipsA range of industry based scholarships are offered each year to Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering students at all course levels. Selection is based on academic merit |
